Here’s something to boost your mood today: You may not be hired to be a Victoria’s Secret model, but a Victoria’s Secret model wouldn’t be ushered in the door at your job either.
Two Israeli researchers studied what happened when job hunters included photos with their CV, which is common in Europe and Asia. They sent two fictional and similar applications to over 2,500 real-life vacancies, one with a photo and one without.
When sending in resumes from fictional men, researchers found that attractive candidates did better than unattractive ones. (Ryan Gosling: If you sent us your CV with a picture, we would definitely call you in for an interview! Just sayin’.)
But for women, it was reversed. Attractive females were less likely to be interviewed if they included a picture. An attractive woman applying directly to a company would have to send out 11 CVs on average to snag an interview, while a plain Jane only had to send out seven.
Is it because people think pretty candidates are dumb? The researchers explored this possibility by having the pictures rated by both attractiveness and intelligence, and found no correlation between the two.
Given that HR departments are currently largely the domain of women (93% of the people choosing the candidates for interviews in the study were female), researchers concluded it was jealousy leading them to trash CVs of attractive females. Ohhh, cat fight.
If that’s true, maybe these HR managers should remember the words of Taylor Swift, Katie Couric, Madeline Albright: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”
