Dollar Store Recipes: St. Patrick’s Day!

This is a post by staff writer Pamela Britton-Baer, whose mission is to help fight your evil debt blob and get your personal finances in tip top shape.

It’s March again, the time of Mardi Gras beads and wearing green to avoid getting pinched. With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner we thought it’d be fun to go green… with our party theme, that is.

Before we dive into the snacks and drinks, if you’re planning a traditional Irish dinner, don’t serve corned beef and cabbage. Believe it or not, that’s like calling baked Alaska a favorite dish of the Yukon. (It was invented in New York). A more traditional Irish meal would be shepherd’s pie.

Okay, so let’s get the party started. A quick trip to the dollar store should yield everything from green hats to green bowls. But simply sticking with decorations isn’t what our green-theme is all about. So how about some glassware like the green stemware we found? With some clever concoctions poured inside, they’ll look even more pastoral.

So what are we serving? Let’s start with our shopping list. A lot of this, as with most of our dollar store recipes, can be found for $1 or less. Things like mint chip ice cream and vegetables will need to be bought a regular grocery store. Just to make it easy, everything on the right can be found at the dollar store!

The Shopping List (Grocery and Dollar Store Edition)

St Patrick's Day

Let’s Start With Green Snacks

Slice up some of those veggies, but instead of dipping them in white ranch dressing, mix in a little blue and yellow food dye first. Or how about some avocado-flavored chips dipped in, what else, green guacamole. Baked veggie sticks come in green too, as do kale chips. Pour them into a themed bowl from the dollar store.

Any green fruit also works–green apples, grapes, kiwi, honeydew melon…

St Patricks Day

No party would be complete without a dessert or two. We love green treats–Rice Krispy treats, that is. Follow the traditional recipe only toss in a dash of that green dye with the vanilla. See the recipe from on Pinterest here. Or, whip up the box of brownies and toss some green M&Ms on top. So, sooooo tasty and oh, so cheap.

Sip Green-Colored Drinks

St Patricks Day

All that food will undoubtedly make your guests thirsty. Plus, it wouldn’t be St. Patrick’s Day without an Irish Mint shake or two … or three.  Scoop some mint chip ice cream into the blender, toss in a little milk to soften it up, and mix. If you’re partying with adults, toss in a shot of crème de menthe. Yum.

Remember that pineapple soda from our shopping list? We’ve come up with a fun drink for the kids to mix up. Simply pour some pineapple soda into a glass, squirt in a dash of the blue-colored berry juice, and viola, you’ve gone green!

Of course, if you really want to go green, nothing could be more Irish-looking than an appletini. We prefer two parts Rose’s Sour Apple Cocktail Infusion with one part Smirnoff apple-flavored vodka, but some prefer one part Sour Apple Schnapps, one part vodka and one part apple juice. Or check out this recipe for an Irish Cocktail. Either way you can’t go wrong. Poured into a green cocktail glass from the dollar store and you’ll bring new meaning to the word “festive.”

You don’t need the luck of the Irish to go green this March 17th. With Supermoney’s help, you can be festive and frugal. Go ahead. Kiss that blarney stone. We promise it will be SuperFun!
