Facebook has steadily become one of the most popular social media sites in the world, with 1.59 billion users logging on each month. Its determined and proud founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has recently climbed higher up the ladder of the rich and famous, now holding the title of the sixth wealthiest person in the world.
On January 28th, 2016, stock trading amped the success of the young entrepreneur by a whopping $6 billion, accompanied by ever increasing revenue figures. Facebook released statements that it again had a fruitful quarter with profits on the rise from the year-end of 2015. This caused Zuckerberg’s worth to peak at a current estimated $46.2 billion.
Starting in January of 2013, Zuckerberg reduced his own salary to $1 per year, but that doesn’t seem to have hurt his bank account at all. The social media genius continues to reap the many benefits from his always evolving innovations. His triumph is a testimony to hard work and the importance of great ideas.
The Elite Six
While Zuckerberg climbs toward the top of that elite list of the uber-wealthy, there are still five other individuals standing between him and the #1 spot:
While their collective wealth is indeed impressive, these elite five have suffered a loss of $19 billion between them in 2015, attributed to a loss in the value of global equities. While they bring together an impressive total net worth of $3.7 trillion, that figure has dropped significantly since May of last year, when the total was a much higher $4.3 trillion.
What is perhaps most impressive about Zuckerberg is the fact that his wealth is not only the result of his own intelligence and hard work, but also the speed at which he has accumulated it. Zuckerberg became the youngest ever self-made billionaire at the age of 23, according to the 2008 list published annually by Forbes.
A Change In Direction
Zuckerberg, who is known for his philanthropic nature, has recently taken on a new role. Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announced in December that they welcomed their daughter Max into the world.
It seems as though this new role of being “daddy” has the billionaire re-thinking his priorities. While announcing the birth of their daughter, the power-couple also announced plans to give 99% of their fortune, a jaw-dropping $45 billion, to charity.
The majority of this donation will be made to the Zuckerberg Chan Initiative, founded in honor of the birth of Maxima Chan Zuckerberg. The goal of this impactful LLC is to “advance human potential and promote equality in areas such as health, education, scientific research and energy”.
