New Jersey Manufacturers Casualty Insurance Co. was founded in 1913 to provide workers’ compensation to New Jersey’s growing business community. In 1921, it became New Jersey Manufacturer’s Insurance Group (NJM) and expanded its offerings to include personal and commercial auto insurance and homeowners coverage. Fast forward almost 100 years, and the company is still going strong.
Today, in addition to workers’ comp, auto, and homeowners insurance, NJM offers recreational auto, renters, and umbrella insurance. Unlike many other insurers, it also offers dividends on several of its policies depending on economic and financial factors at the company.
Let’s take an in-depth look at NJM and what you should know before signing up.
NJM insurance products
“In New Jersey, NJM currently writes personal auto, motorcycle, boat, collector car, homeowners, renters, condo, umbrella, commercial auto, and workers compensation insurance. For Pennsylvania, we write those same lines except for commercial auto insurance. In New York, we write only workers’ compensation insurance,” says Linda Coles, NJM, Public Affairs Manager.
Here is a little more about each insurance product:
Auto and recreation
The company offers two auto insurance policy options: basic and standard. The basic policy includes liability coverage and personal injury protection (PIP). The standard includes liability, PIP, uninsured/underinsured motorist, collision, and comprehensive coverages. In addition, roadside assistance is included.
NJM auto insurance policies protect against property damage and bodily injury costs, but they go further by also offering dividends to policyholders. The dividends are a percentage of the premium they have paid and get credited to their policy when they renew. Dividends have been paid by the company each year since 1994.
“Coles explains, “NJM operates as a true mutual insurer in the interest of its policyholders. In so doing, we ensure that policyholders benefit from efficient operations through lower upfront premiums and/or in dividends after the policy period. We have historically paid a dividend in our existing books of business when generated by efficient operations in both personal and commercial lines, as determined by our Board of Directors.”
She adds, “As we expand our personal lines offerings outside the State, our focus is to ensure that applicants benefit from a competitive, efficiency driven premium rate in the first instance with the potential for paying dividends on these products as the books develop over time.”
Discounts are available for:
- Bundling an auto policy with a home insurance policy
- Earning good grades as a student
- Insuring multiple cars
- Completing a defensive driving course
- Taking anti-theft precautions
- Undergoing drivers training if you’re under 21
Further, NJM has a partnership with American Modern, a nationwide provider of specialty insurance, to provide insurance for boats, classic cars, ATVs, and motorcycles.
Home and property
NJM offers homeowners, renters, and condominium insurance. New Jersey policyholders will be eligible to earn dividends back on these also, just as they do with the auto policy.
The NJM home insurance policy will cover your home and personal belongings. If you need more protection, you can add endorsements that provide additional coverage. Endorsements are available for specific items, such as furs or jewelry, for fraudulent use of your credit card, for identity theft, and for covering additional members of a household.
If you don’t own your home, renters insurance provides liability coverage and protects your possessions.
If you do own your home, but it happens to be a condo, you’ll want to opt for NJM’s condo insurance. It protects your possessions and interior walls, in addition to providing personal liability. Often, condo master policies insure the building, common areas, and property, but nothing more.
Worried you may need more coverage than individual policies provide? NJM’s umbrella insurance policy can be added on top of your auto and home insurance policies to provide you with up to $5 million more in coverage. It also provides coverage for slander, libel, and defamation lawsuits.
To qualify, you must have an NJM auto insurance policy with a liability limit of at least $500,000 and a home insurance policy (NJM or other) with a $500,000 liability limit.
NJM’s commercial insurance includes auto and workers’ compensation.
Workers’ compensation was the first type of insurance NJM offered, and it’s still available today. In addition to covering employees who are injured at work, NJM commits to helping businesses prevent accidents. How? The company has an in-house engineering department that visits businesses and creates customized safety plans. Further, it conducts on-site training seminars and performs a loss analysis after an accident occurs to reduce the risk of repeat injuries.
NJM’s commercial auto insurance provides policies to all kinds of business, from small to large. Customers, like those with personal auto policies, also receive dividends each year. The dividends are credited at the end of each 12-month policy and are used to reduce the premium for the upcoming year.

NJM insurance pros and cons
| Pros|| Cons|
NJM has been around for more than 100 years, and while it has grown, it has stayed small, only serving New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. If you live in a qualifying area and are eligible for membership, this is a company that comes highly recommended. Head to the website and get a quote to find out what NJM can offer you. But always remember to shop around before committing.
If you speak to an insurance agent, he or she is incentivized to sell the policies with the highest commissions. So, it’s best to do some research on your own. If you don’t qualify, or if you want to compare an NJM quote against a few other quotes, find a list of insurance providers here, many without exclusive eligibility requirements. Compare them side-by-side and find the one that offers the best overall value for your situation.
