What makes credit unions so special is that we work to serve our members, unlike banks, who make profits for their shareholders — that's a huge difference. At Members First, our members are owners of the credit union. Meaning, every member owns an equal share in Members First, regardless of how much money is in their account. Our members have the power to guide the credit union's course of action by voting on who will serve on the volunteer Board of Directors. As a credit union, we practice a one-member, one-vote philosophy for all elections differing from for-profit institutions, like banks, whose shareholders vote according to the number of shares of stock they own. Also, as a not-for-profit organization, our earnings directly benefit our members in the form of higher savings rates, better loan rates, lower fees, and other services. The credit union difference isn't something new. It's a simple idea that started several hundred years ago by people, like you, who simply wanted a place to bank, that wasn't a bank.
