Kickstarter is the world's largest funding platform for creative projects. Every week, tens of thousands of people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, games, fashion, food, publishing, and other creative fields. Since its launch on April 28th, 2009, more than five million people have pledged more than $900 million to projects by creators who always maintain full ownership and complete creative control of their work.

Kickstarter bills itself as the largest funding platform for creative projects. But the categories for projects that are accepted is narrow and many would-be projects are turned down. The all-or-nothing funding is another potential drawback.

First you have to fit your project into one of their strict categories. Second, you have to wait for your project to be approved before it goes live. Third, you don't receive anything unless your project is 100% funded. Kickstarter may be the biggest crowdfunding platform but there are others that don't put you through so much grief.
