Who is SDFCU EMV Platinum Visa Designed For?

The State Department Federal Credit Union EMV Visa Platinum card is for people who want a low interest, no-annual-fee credit card that also has a rewards program. The SDFCU is primarily a credit union for employees of The Department of States but anybody can qualify by selecting the American Consumer Council as an associated organization when filling in a membership application.

What are the Interest Rates?

Interest rates are low and there is no penalty rate to worry about if you're late on a payment. Depending on their credit history members can qualify for an APR of 6.99% to 14.99%. The same range applies for cash advances and balance transfers.

Are there any fees for EMV Visa Platinum Credit Card?

Low fees are the hallmark of credit unions and the SDFCU doesn't disappoint. The SDFCU EMV Platinum Visa has no annual fee, no application fee, no balance transfer fee and no foreign transaction fees. There is a $3 cash advance fee, if members use an ATM but the fee is waived when the cash advance is done over the counter.

As long as members are on time with their monthly payments there are no fees to worry about. There is, of course, a $25 fee for late payments and returned payments.

What Is the Rewards Program Like?

The Flexpoints Rewards Program allows SDFCU members to earn points on every purchase they make with their credit card. Cardholders earn 5 points when they use their credit card to pay online through SDFCU's Bill Pay or when they shop through SDFCU's online Perks Mall. There is also a three points per dollar spent ratio for members who shop through the More Points website, accessible through SDFCU's Flexpoints website. All other purchases earn 1 point for every dollar.

As with most programs, points can be redeemed for merchandise, travel, gift cards and even as donations to charitable organizations. However, SDFCU also allows members to redeem their points toward lower interest rates throughout the year.

What about the signup bonus?

There isn't a signup bonus.

Any Other Benefits?

The card comes with secured chip-enabled technology, which is a requirement in many countries. Cardholders can also access a network of 30,000 CO-OP ATMs without having to worry about additional fees.

How Is EMV Visa Platinum Credit Card Better Than Other Credit Cards?

The SDFCU EMV Visa Platinum combines a generous rewards program with low interest rates and no annual or balance transfer fees. This makes it an excellent card to pay off high interest credit card debt and earn points on new purchases. The fact it doesn't have foreign transaction fees and includes secured chip-enabled technology also makes an excellent low-cost travel card.

Really, really nice secured credit card. I'm surprised at the low fees and the fact that it has such a good rewards program. I've had other secured cards and rewards programs where nowhere in sight! You do have to donate to the American Consumer Council, but I was okay with doing that.
