Features

Back in the day, American Express only issued charge cards requiring payment in full after a grace period of approximately one month. Today, AmEx provides credit cards with revolving payment schedules. But for many people, the real prestige remains with its charge cards. The Gold Card from American Express is one of the top level personal charge cards.

Who Is the Gold Card from American Express Designed For?

The American Express Gold card is ideal for individuals who pay off their credit card balances in full every month. Doing so allows for interest-free purchases with the luxury of an extra 30 days or so to make the payment. The Membership Rewards program is heavily weighted toward luxury items such as airline tickets and hotel stays. On the other hand, everyday purchases such as groceries and utility bills aren't rewarded nearly as much.

Are There Annual Fees?

The annual fee is $160, but it is waived the first year. The first five additional cards are complimentary, but the annual fee for 6 or more cards is $35 per card.

Does the Gold Card from American Express Offer Rewards?

The slogan for American Express is “membership has its privileges.” The statement is not an exaggeration. One of the main benefits to holding an Amex card is to get access to the Member Rewards program, which includes early access to in-demand concerts and shows, roadside assistance, baggage insurance, travel accident insurance, car rental collision damage protection, extended warranty and purchase protection.

But the Gold Card from American Express also features a points program that awards 2 points for every dollar for flights purchased directly with airlines and at US restaurants. You can also get 2 points per dollar spent when booking hotel stays for two consecutive nights or more at participating properties. All other purchases earn 1 point per $1. Points can be used for travel, merchandise, gift cards, even charity contributions.

Are There Foreign Transaction Fees?

There are no foreign transaction fees.

Are There Late Payment or Other Penalty Fees?

Late payments or returned payments incur a penalty fee of $38 each.

I was so excited when I got my gold card in the mail! It is shiny and it is gold! I also like the points that I get with purchases. I don't pay too much attention to what earns me two points per dollar and what earns me one point per dollar--I just know I earn points, and all is good.

I always wanted a gold card, because it just looked so prestigious. I finally got mine! It took applying twice. The first time I applied I didn't qualify. I waited a year; got my credit score up from 710 to 750 and I got a card. I celebrated by taking my fiance out for dinner. He was happy, too!

Love this card and the rewards program. I've been putting all expenses through this card so I can get as many points as possible. I've gotten some good benefit out of those points, which is good, because my last card didn't get me anything. I finally woke up and realized that I should be doing something to make my money work extra hard for me. This card has helped me do that.

This card is nice, although I don't always find things on amextravel.com that I would like to buy, so I don't often earn 2 points per dollar. I do, however, use the card as much as possible, so I like earning the 1 point, and there are other noteworthy benefits, such as baggage insurance and travel accident insurance, both of which I've had to use before.

I thought because I had a gold card that I wouldn't have to pay foreign transaction fees, so I went ahead and bought some stuff when I was overseas with the card. Big mistake. The foreign transaction fee is 2.7%, and that was costly for me. I would have used my other card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees if I'd known.

With this card, membership does have its privileges. I am a music fan, and I wanted the benefit of getting early access to concerts and shows. I also like their points program that means that you get 2 points for every dollar you spend at their travel site and one point otherwise. Overall, it's been a pretty good card (I've had it about a year). It was worth it when I got access to some tickets last summer.

Their purchase protection program that is attached to this card if you use it to buy merchandise can save you a lot of hassles and headaches. You don't have to haggle with the place you bought the merchandise from, as happens with other cards. You just simply try to return the item and then call Amex and they take over from there and give you your money back. You can be on your merry way.

The annual fee for this card is waived the first year, but it does charge you the second year for $125 and $35 for any additional cards. That being said, it's important to use the card as much as possible to earn enough points for this to make sense. I like American Express, but I'm not all that excited about paying an annual fee when there are other Visas and MCs that don't charge one.

This card has helped my family maintain budget goals with its net 30 approach to finances. Every family should have 1

I love this card. Whatever I purchase is insured when I use this card. I bought a Kindle Fire from a local electronic store. It didn't work and when I went back to the store they gave me a hassle exchanging it. I made one call to AMEX and they gave me my money back. Just like that. I use this now card for all my major purchases. I recommend this card to anyone.

I thought the customer service from American Express was supposed to be premium, but it looks like that isn't the case. At least not for me. I was in dire need of some real assistance when I was overseas recently and they didn't come through for me. Otherwise the experience with them has been good.
