H&R Block does not make self-preparation easy! I did my taxes last year with the online version and went with the retail package this year. There is no possible way to upload your previous years return if you used a different version, even though it is all through H&R Block. They need to fix this so it is streamlined and you can upload your H&R Block tax return to ALL H&R Block tax return programs. Without that, it is so inconvenient and takes more time.

I had an issue with H&R Block with my first U.S. tax return. I recently moved to the country with my husband and two children and thought they would be good to do our taxes. They told us to get documents from the IRS and filed my return. Afterward, I was contacted by the IRS and told that I sent my federal returns to the incorrect place, since we had specific documents that needed to go to another place. I don't know why H&R Block did not know this, and ... now I am stuck fixing the problem myself. I am a new U.S. citizen, so I thought they would be a good choice, but I was wrong. More Less

I used H&R Block online tax software to change up my usual self tax preparation software. I move around a lot and some of my state returns were not accepted through H&R Block. I was irritated because they were a more expensive option, so I figured they'd be a good choice. But no. The software is also more difficult to navigate compared to other ones and it is not as straightforward. Needless to say, I will not be using them again.

My husband and I went to H&R Block to file our taxes from last year. Afterward they told us we'd be getting back $100 less than what they were going to charge us for the return. My husband is a contractor and uses his vehicle to travel a lot, but they said he couldn't deduct those expenses. He wasn't too happy with that so we went somewhere else and they were able to deduct his travel expenses, charge us a lower rate, and get us back a higher refund.

I used to use the H&R Block software to file my taxes, but when I moved out of state and there was a local office right around the corner, I wanted to give them a shot. I figured I'd save some time. But, little did I know, I ended up paying more than double to have the actual tax preparer do it for me. I got back pretty much the same amount as years before (not much has changed) but I am not happy that is cost so much. I'll ... probably go back to doing it myself. More Less

H&R Block is not known for their customer service.. I spent half an hour on hold with their customer service line after I had a question about my return. I couldn't find the answer on their site or anywhere online, so calling was my last option. The loop they keep place is so irritating, that I am ready to hang up. If I can't rely on them to give me a prompt answer to my question, they are obviously unreliable and are unable to help me with anything.

They are too expensive and don't offer enough value for that money to make it worth my while. I have found plenty of other places that do the same (if not better) job for a fraction of the cost.

The price H&R Block gave me after doing my taxes almost made me laugh! This was my first time trying them, and without knowing it, they charge such a high fee. I understand that it would be more since a person is doing it in a brick and mortar office compared to doing it yourself, but wow, what a difference in price! I politely declined and took my documents. I left knowing I'd be paying much, much less if I took the time to do it m myself.

The customer service that the receptionist at my local H&R Block has does not exist. At least, it did not with me. I initially emailed them a few days before my tax preparation appointment to get a list of documents I would need to bring in, and never heard anything back. Then I called and the receptionist kept telling me the only way they could verify my identity to pull up my file was for me to give them the last four of my social. I didn't want to, and ... they would not help me in any way. So impolite. Not a way I'd treat a paying customer. More Less

I don't get how H&R Block calculates their fees, because I'm sure they ripped me off. I work part time and made only $2,000 more last year than the year before, but was charged almost $150 more for my return. I have also spoken with friends who make a larger salary and pay the same amount I did. Other than the slight increase in income, nothing else changed. They seem to charge whatever. I'd like to see the chart or resource they are taking these numbers from.

H&R Block made such a HUGE mistake on our taxes this year. My husband made sure to pay his quarterly taxes plus some throughout the year so we wouldn't have to pay as much at the end. After H&R Block did our taxes we looked them over and saw that they had made a mistake. We started with them telling us we'd get a huge return to owing a few hundred dollars. They are not thorough, so you better look anything they've done over a few times.

This place has funny practices in place. I brought my sister to the local branch she's been going to for years, although I have never actually used the service. She is disabled and receives disability checks for income. Everything has stayed the same over the past couple years except for a small stock sale. Her preparation fee almost doubled because of a couple extra dollars. The tax preparer said any change would cause an increase in the fee, but almost double is insane.

I am so tired of the fees constantly increasing for this tax company. I get that everything goes up with time, but come on. Your fees are just way too much now. I've been doing business with H&R Block for over ten years now, but I just can't anymore. This year, I was charged a fee AFTER my taxes were filed. So I didn't have a choice but to pay it if I wanted to receive my return. It's getting ridiculous.

I usually do my taxes with the local H&R Block without any issue. They've always been good to me. I moved across town and went to a different branch this year out of convenience. They were the complete opposite of my previous branch. I had a little issue with how professional my preparer was, and spoke with the manager on duty. He assured me he would look into it and give me a call after everything was settled. A few weeks later, no call. It's amazing how different things could ... be from location to location. More Less

I used H&R Block one time and wish I hadn't. I could have done my returns on my own using Turbo Tax, and for a fraction of the cost. They did an okay job, but I just didn't see the value in having to go to a branch to file my returns when I can do it online for the same amount of time, and save myself some money.

This place needs to get their selves in order! I got my taxes done here and paid the fee upfront, in cash. They didn't have any change at the time so my boyfriend ran next door to a convenience store to get change so I could pay the exact amount. The next day I called to confirm that my taxes were completed and my preparer said I didn't pay the fee. I had to go back and show them my receipt before they believed me. Come on guys, let's get ... ourselves together! More Less

Good service if you have no deductions and are straight w2. Otherwise they aren't very good and can cause issues with possible audits and such.

I would honestly like to apologize for the lady who helped me at H&R Block, because I was probably very rude to her. When I saw the fee that they were going to charge me for my refund, I literally picked up my bag and walked out. It was twenty-five percent of my entire refund. For a place that advertises as getting you the best refund possible, that is a huge chunk to take away. I know it was not my tax preparers fault, but I will not be going ... back there. More Less

I worked with an H&R Block tax preparer for about 10 minutes on a very simple tax return and was charged $230. This is criminal behavior! I actually make less than I did in the previous years, so the input on the tax preparers part was less than before (remind you, it took 10 minutes) so I don't know why I was charged so much. It is ridiculous. I will never go here again. I feel like I was robbed of my hard earned money.

I called around to a few local tax preparation offices and accounting firms to get quotes on my return. I gave them all of the forms I had to be filed and a bunch of information to get an accurate number. H&R Block offered a decent price, so I went there. After filing, the woman doing my taxes gave me a price of almost $100 more than my original quote. I didn't have any additional forms, so I complained. They wouldn't budge on price and were persistent with their new ... number. Reluctantly, I paid. But I probably won't go back next year because they don't stay true to what they say. More Less

We went to H&R Block to ensure that our taxes would be done correctly, and especially, by a professional. My girlfriend was watching as the preparer was inputting the information and pointed out an error he had made. He put in the incorrect number for the taxes we paid on our new home last year. This is why we went to a professional in the first place, but I guess my girlfriend has a better attention to detail than the guys at H&R Block.

I paid a hefty fee for H&R Block to do my taxes. I had been waiting in the office (they were running behind schedule, I think) for over an hour when they finally started my taxes. I figured I had spent too much time on this to just walk away, so I paid the high fee. I was told I'd get the refund in approximately two to three weeks. It is almost two months later, and nothing. The people at the office who I've spoken with are not helpful and ... are doing nothing to expedite the process. More Less

Due to my H&R Block tax preparers mistakes, I was audited. I was almost positive that I could not claim my daughter as a dependent anymore and file as head of the household, but he insisted I could. So I went ahead and let him file the way he said to. Lo and behold, this year I get an audit notice. I leaned on H&R Block for support throughout the ordeal, but they were not there for me. I pretty much had to figure it all out myself directly with ... the IRS. More Less

They must hire amateur tax preparers or people new to the field, because the man I was working with seemed a little lost. Maybe he was just not having a good day, I don't know. After the mediocre service and tax work, I was charged three times what I paid last year. There were no changes and it was the exact same work. I did not feel comfortable having them file my returns and next time I will be going to a real professional.

I have been going to my local H&R Block for many years now, so it kills me to give them a bad review. But, they can't do the same thing twice and get away with it. Last year, they sent my returns to the wrong address. They fixed it in a timely manner and so I didn't have any problems. This year, they somehow did the same thing again. But, they are not as helpful and polite as they were last year. I don't get how you can make the ... same mistake twice, especially if it was supposedly "fixed" last year. More Less

I usually file on my own but since this was my first year as a homeowner, I wanted a professional to do it. I took my information to H&R Block and they ended up charging me SO much money. If I knew it was going to even be CLOSE to that number, I would have done it myself again. I filed a complaint with them and was told I'd get a call back within a few days with a resolution. I never got a call and haven't heard from them ... since. More Less

I took my W-2's to one of their offices this year because of their promise to find money from past year claims. Turns out they did find me a little more money from last year, but the price of their service was 3 times more than what they found. Nice people though.

I am not a fan of H&R Block. I used to go to another tax preparation office, but an H&R Block was closer and I was busy, so I figured I'd give it a shot. The tax preparer filed my taxes on the spot, which I did not expect. He also e-filed for me automatically when I did not want to e-file. He didn't ask or give me a choice. He was a nice guy, I just do not like the fact that he did all of these things without ... informing me first. Shouldn't I have some sort of say about how my taxes are filed? More Less

I got to the H&R Block office 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment time. After sitting there for 45 minutes (30 minutes after the scheduled time) I got a little irritated because the entire time I was there I was watching 2 other tax preparers sitting, doing nothing. A woman walks in and asks if they have time to take her. The receptionist says yes, no problem. So she is helped by one of the tax preparers that was just sitting there, while I have been obviously waiting for a ... long time. Horrible customer service! More Less

I started my tax return with the H&R Block online software but ended up quitting and using another program for my return. I got to the earn income credit section, and apparently H&R Block charges you to receive that specific credit. I knew other programs didn't charge for this so I just closed out right then. It was pretty easy to use, so I wouldn't rule it out for everyone. For me, though, it just was not the best option.

These people don't have a clue what they are doing. They filed my return last year and caused me to get audited. The IRS asked me why I filed this and that, but I didn't have any answers and H&R wasn't much help.

I'm not sure where H&R Block went wrong with my tax return, but for whatever reason, I owe additional money for my state return. A very significant amount, actually. I think it had to do with the preparation by H&R Block. I called the local office where I got the taxes done, and couldn't get in touch with my preparer. I emailed and after a week, I haven't heard anything back. I'm not sure what to do and my only choice now is to just make payments on what I ... owe. More Less

H&R Block severely screwed me over. I got my taxes done a few years ago through them and this year, the IRS contacted me stating that I owe a couple thousand dollars because of the mistakes made on my previous return. I went back to the office where I got it done and a new preparer went over my return, pointing out the issues the previous preparer made. I was told I'd get my tax preparation fee back, but it's been two months and nothing has happened. Steer clear of ... H&R Block, they will come back to bite you. More Less

I used them a couple of times. Very straight forward but if you need to be creative or have a complicated tax filing, you will need to get to a tax expert. Cost is about average. $150-250 for married simple filing.

My local H&R Block is wonderful! I attempted to do my taxes myself this year and ultimately it just did not work in my favor. I figured I was saving money by doing it myself, but it ended up taking me an entire day before I gave up. H&R Block did them quickly-much quicker than I would have expected. It was a little pricey but it saved me from a HUGE headache. I really appreciate their level of service and will probably be returning next year.

I spent so many years doing my taxed myself with online programs and software I bought from the office store. Before, I was only a student with no family, dependents, or anything else. When I got married, bought a house, and had kids, I decided it was time to go to someone who knew what they were doing. H&R Block was the right place for me. They were all pretty nice and I don't think the fee was unreasonable for the help I got. I will be going back next ... year, hopefully I have the same preparer! More Less

I usually do my taxes from home, but I began freelancing a little in the last year so I didn't want to miss out on any deductions I could get. I headed over to my local H&R Block for some professional help. Honestly, I felt like my preparer was not interested in getting me all the deductions I could have gotten. I have made various (expensive) purchases for my freelancing jobs, and for whatever reason, nothing was used for my return. I came prepared with receipts, lists, etc., but my ... preparer didn't really take them into consideration... More Less

Now, I am sure that this is a very branch-specific review, but I will not be returning to H&R Block for my tax preparation anytime soon. The fact that the company would hire these sort of people really turns me off to the entire brand itself. I spoke with two different receptionists, both on the phone and in the branch, and they were very rude. No customer service there. Then my tax preparer wasn't very knowledgeable about my tax situation.. which was a little unnerving. I am going to go ... elsewhere next year so I don't have to deal with them. More Less

I received a letter from the IRS yesterday stating that I overpaid on my taxes last year. I just happened to use a local H&R Block office last year. I called to office to complain and after twenty minutes of me ranting they told me they'd give me back half of my preparation fee. Well, thanks a bunch! I overpaid and now I'm only getting back HALF of what I paid for you guys to screw me over. Never again! Go somewhere else unless you want to get a letter ... from the IRS. More Less

H&R Block has been great for our tax preparation for a couple years now! My husband and I always get a great preparer who is nice and does everything in a timely manner. We purchased our first home last year, so we figured everything would be a little more complicated this time around, but nope! It was all done in the same amount of time with the same great service. We love H&R Block and would recommend them to anyone.
