USAA Umbrella Insurance Overview

Umbrella insurance is an additional liability insurance that protects your assets from large claims and lawsuits over and above your auto or homeowner insurance. It is designed to work when your other liability insurances either don’t offer coverage, or you exceed their liability limits.

USAA was launched in 1922 by 25 army officers who struggled to find an insurance company that would cover their vehicles. In 2016, USAA has $28.2 billion in assets and is the 49th largest company on the Fortune 500 list by net worth. It is also the 27th largest bank and the 5th largest homeowners insurer.  USAA has 11.2 million members and is the fifth largest homeowners insurer in the United States. However, USAA policies are only available to service members and their relatives.

What Are USAA Umbrella Insurance’s Ratings?

Rating companies give USAA excellent scores for financial stability. Moody’s gives USAA property insurance an Aaa rating, the highest rating possible. Standard’s & Poor’s rates it as AA+ (very strong), the second highest rating available. A.M. Best also gives USAA its highest rating, A++ (Superior). The BBB gives USAA an A+ rating.

What Coverage Does USAA Umbrella Insurance Offer?

USAA’s umbrella insurance policies provide coverage for liability claims that are not covered by auto and home insurance policies. Prices vary depending, among other things, on how much liability coverage you need. A $1 million umbrella insurance policy can cost as little as $19 a month (April 2016).

How Does USAA Compare with Other Umbrella Insurance Companies?

The main differentiating factors with umbrella insurance policies are customer service and financial stability. USAA was Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Company in 2014 and 2015. G.I. Jobs Magazine named USAA the number 1 military-friendly employer. Forrester Research Inc. found USAA to be the Top-ranked in Bank, Credit Card, and Insurance among all the brands it surveyed.

When it comes to financial stability, USAA’s property (home and auto) insurance has some of the best ratings in the industry. Both A.M. Best and Moody’s give it their best rating, and Standard & Poor’s gives it its second best score.
