Innocent Spouse Relief

Innocent spouse relief is a provision in the tax code that allows individuals who have filed joint tax returns with a spouse or former spouse to be relieved of responsibility for paying tax, interest, and penalties that are owed as a result of incorrect information reported on the joint return. Innocent spouse relief may be available to individuals who can demonstrate that they did not know or have reason to know about the incorrect information when they signed the return.
