Walmart’s Money Transfer Services: In-depth Review

Walmart is the world’s largest retailer by a sizeable margin. In 2014, it launched its Walmart2Walmart domestic money transfer service powered by Ria. This enabled Americans to affordably and quickly send money to each other through U.S. Walmart locations.

Earlier this year, the company took it a step further by partnering with Moneygram to launch Walmart2World, a global money transfer service.

Their fixed pricing structures (no matter where money is sent from or received), competitive exchange rates, and the delivery of funds in 10 minutes or less are the main factors setting both services apart from the competition.

But Is Walmart the best option when transferring money? Here’s an in-depth review to help you decide.

Walmart money transfer services

Here’s everything you need to know about Walmart’s money transfer services.

Walmart2World with Moneygram: International transfers

The latest addition to the Walmart money transfer services, Walmart2World, allows users to send money to recipients all over the world.

How do you send the money?

You can initiate the transfer in the Walmart mobile app, online from a desktop computer, or in an agent location.

How much can you send?

In most cases, you can send up to $2,500 per online transfer and up to $6,000 in online transfers every 30 calendar days. If you need to send more, you may get higher limits by visiting a MoneyGram or Walmart location.

How much do transfers cost?

First, you will be charged a transfer fee. The fees are currently as follows:

  • $4.00 for transfers up to $50
  • $8.00 for transfers from $51 to $1,000
  • $16.00 for transfers from $1,001 to $2,500

Additionally, you will pay for the conversion.

For example, according to Bloomberg, 20.0030 MXN pesos equals one U.S. dollar as of the day of this writing.

If you need to send the equivalent of 1,000 USD in MXN pesos to a recipient, the exchange rate that Walmart2World is offering today is 19.8202 per U.S. dollar.

It’s not a huge difference. However, if you send 1,000 USD to your recipient, which converts to 19,820 MXN pesos, they will only receive the equivalent of about 990 USD.

Walmart is earning about 10 USD from the gap in the exchange rate. In order for your recipient to receive 1,000 USD, you will need to send 20,003 MXN pesos, which will cost you 1009.22 USD.

Additionally, the transfer fee would be 16 USD, so the total cost to send 1,000 USD with Walmart2World today is 25.22 USD.

You can estimate your fees for a particular transaction on the Walmart website.

How long does a transfer take?

If you select the “cash pickup: option, money is usually available for pickup at any Moneygram location in the receiver’s county, province, or state within minutes.

If you send via bank transfer, it can be available as little as a few minutes or as long as the next day. The speed will depend on the banking hours and system availability in the recipients’ country.

How can recipients receive money?

There are various ways for recipients to receive the money, including:

  • Cash pickup: The recipient can pick up the cash at a Walmart or MoneyGram agent location.
  • Account deposit: The money can be sent directly to the recipient’s bank account.
  • Send to the card: The money can be sent to the recipient’s debit card.
  • Home delivery: The money can be delivered to a person’s home address.
  • Mobile Wallet: The money can be sent to a mobile wallet.

Standout feature: Walmart’s Mobile Express Money Services

Inside Walmart’s mobile app (for Android and Apple), users will find Mobile Express Money Service. It allows users to input their information for transfers, eliminating the need to re-enter the same information for each transaction.

You can also enter the details of a money transfer or bill payment transaction, and a QR code will be generated that can easily be scanned at the counter in-store.

WEIGH THE PROS AND CONS

Walmart offers a comprehensive lineup of money transfer services. Here’s a summary of the pros and cons:

Pros
  • Send money online, by mobile, and in-person
  • Fixed transfer fees are very competitive
  • Send domestically and between the U.S. and 200 other countries and territories
  • Fast funding speed
  • Multiple ways to receive cash
  • Reach customer service by phone, online chat, or a contact form
  • Helpful mobile app
  • One of the largest money transfer providers in the world
  • Pay bills
Cons
  • Low transfer limits online ($2,500 per transaction)
  • Walmart2Walmart is only available in-store
  • Domestic transfer rates online with Moneygram are much more expensive than Walmart2Walmart or Walmart2World

Walmart has disrupted the money transfer market twice with its low fixed transfer fees that don’t change based on the countries involved in the transaction. It started with domestic transfers (Walmart2Walmart) and now has expanded to the global level with Walmart2World.

The company also has a helpful mobile app, competitive exchange rates, several channels of support for customers, and very competitive transfer speeds.

All of that being said, users should still be mindful of the exchange rate and should compare the total costs of a transfer (exchange rate and transfer fee costs) with at least two other money transfer services to ensure they are getting the best deal.
