What Is TurboTax's Pricing Structure?

TurboTax has four editions: a free edition, a deluxe edition ($34.99), a premier edition ($54.99), and a Home & Business edition ($79.99).

The free edition offers free federal and state tax filing, but it is only for taxpayers with simple tax returns. It only includes forms 1040EZ/1040A. If you are a freelancer, self-employed, or you want to import last year’s tax information, you will need to purchase another edition. On the other hand, if you make less than $100k, don’t own a business or rental property, and you don’t have large medical bills, this is an excellent deal.

The deluxe edition ($34.99) is designed for taxpayers with more complex tax returns who want to maximize their deductions. It searches over 350 tax deductions and credits, calculates mortgage/property tax deductions (Schedule A), converts charitable donations into deductions, covers independent contractors and freelancers, and allows customers to import data from the previous tax year.

The Premier edition ($54.99) is for taxpayers with substantial investments and rental property. As well as the services offered by the deluxe edition it also provides coverage for stocks, bonds, and other types of investment income (Schedule D). It also covers rental income (Schedule E), but it doesn’t offer support for self-employment and small business income (Schedule C).

The Home and Business edition ($79.99) is designed for self-employed and small business owners.  As well as all the services offered by the Premier version, it also covers small-business tax deductions and asset depreciation (Schedule C).

Only the free edition includes state returns. Customers who use any of the other packages must pay an additional $36.99 for state returns.

Audit assistance is only provided to clients who purchase Audit Defense; an optional, fee-based service TurboTax offers through TaxAudit.com.

What Are the Advantages & Disadvantages of TurboTax?

Benefits of TurboTax:

  • -       Customers with simple tax returns can file federal and state tax returns for free.
  • -       The software provides free advice on the credits and deductions you can claim.
  • -       Best-selling tax software and over 25 years of experience in the tax preparation sector.
  • -       Returning users are not charged additional fees for rolling-over prior year tax data.
  • -       Automatic Error Detection
  • -       E-Filing is included in the free edition.

Disadvantages of TurboTax:

  • -      The free returns are only for people with very simple tax returns. There are additional fees for “complex” returns. “Complex” returns include federal returns with investments, self-employed taxpayers, taxpayers who own homes, and taxpayers with rental income.
  • -       The paying editions do not include state returns, which come with an extra $36.99 fee.
  • -       TurboTax has some of the most expensive tax software packages.
  • -       Does not provide in-person support

TurboTax has been my go-to for my personal taxes for years. It has been a great program that helps you every step of the way. Even when I have little changes here and there (I was a student at one point) TurboTax hasn't let me down. Adding in my student information was just as easy as putting in my regular W-2's. I also did some contracting work and my 1099's were easy to do, too. I don't have any issues with this tax preparation software and I don't see any ... reason to change! More Less

I actually tried to file with a local CPA and was so upset by what they had to tell me, I walked out. They said I owed the IRS an insane amount of money, and wanted to charge me a lump sum right away for their services. Immediately I got TT and did it myself. It turned out to be for the better because I ended up owing a lot less and the fees were more reasonable than the CPA. TT was very easy to use and I am now ... comfortable doing it on my own. I have rental property so I wasn't sure if TurboTax was the right option for me, but it ended up being a good experience. The rental property section was just as simple and straightforward as the other sections of the program. I did get an error on one part of my return (not the rental section) and called the customer care line, but it was a little hard to get someone on the phone. They weren't readily available like I thought they would be. But other than that, I will ... be rebuying TurboTax next year. More Less

Turbo Tax does a "double check" on your tax return to make sure there aren't anymore areas that need to me addressed. It is obviously formulated to help you get back the maximum return because it makes sure to show you every possible deduction you could get. I have been using this for a few years, and this year wasn't any different. It was just as easy as the previous times, even though a few things have changed with tax laws and the actual TT programs.

The fact that I can stop and save my tax return with TurboTax and then continue a little while later is very important to me. I'm a stay at home mom of two young boys so I don't always have the time to sit in front of the computer for a long time. I have already stopped my return twice and have picked up where I left off without an issue. TurboTax is so user friendly and so much easier than any other software I have used to do my ... taxes. A quick and simple way to get your taxes done yourself, TT helps even the beginners do it themselves. I have been using the software for years and so far, it hasn't let me down. Every year, filling it out is easy, submitting and paying is easy, and I get my refund deposited soon after. I only would recommend making the state forms a little more easy to use. The federal forms are more in depth, and if TT could do the same with the state section, that'd be great.

I don't have a background in tax preparation or anything like that, so I was really hesitant to do my taxes myself this year. But I've been trying to incorporate more DIY into my life, so my taxes were no different. It was my first time using TurboTax and it was so easy to do! It guides you through everything and asks you all of these questions so you won't miss any deductions. It is definitely geared toward the amateur tax preparer. I'd recommend it to all DIYers!

TurboTax's e-file is an essential in my household. We have all been using it for probably three or four years, and have never had an issue. It processes so easily and we all get our returns in a timely manner. TurboTax goes through every deduction you could possibly get and guides you through, step by step. Before we used TurboTax, we were paying someone to do our taxes, and ultimately this program is more economically smart for us.

I use TurboTax for the sheer convenience. Before, I'd drop off my taxes with a local accounting firm that did personal filing as well. I'd have to keep in touch with them, then go pick up my return. Then I'd have to send out my return myself. I started using TurboTax last year as an easier alternative and have been loving it ever since. Everything is done on the computer and it takes so much less time than before. It is a lot easier on my part and I get ... it done a lot quicker. More Less

If you want to do your taxes yourself, TurboTax is the way to go. I didn't want to go through the hassle of taking my taxes to a professional and a friend recommended TurboTax. It is very straightforward, it is almost hard to screw it up. All the questions are so easy to understand and inputting the information is a snap. I thought it would be a pain, but since everything is laid out for you, you can't go wrong.

TurboTax manages to make something as tedious and irritating as taxes and makes them a little bit easier. Since it leads you through the tax forms, all you really need to do it put in the necessary information. TurboTax takes the guesswork out of doing your own taxes, and has always put me as ease when I decide to do them myself. If you have just basic W-2's, I think TurboTax is much easier than actually going to a tax preparation office.

Initially my husband and I tried to do our taxes ourselves the old fashion way, by filling out the forms and mailing them in. Needless to say, that didn't work out. We spent so many nights after work trying to figure everything out and making sure we had the correct forms. My husband finally broke down and bought TurboTax. What took us hours and hours to do, we did in an hour with TurboTax. It was a lot easier. We did spend a little more money for the software, but ... it saved us so much stress and we are confident that we filed correctly. More Less

I've filed with TurboTax for many years now but all of a sudden it seems different. I'm not sure what changes they made to the site but every time it asked if I wanted to be upgraded to plus, I clearly declined, but was upgraded anyway. I completed filing and promptly called customer service to complain. They were really polite but informed me that nothing could be done because my taxes were filed and the fees were paid. How disappointing.

If you have a simple tax return, I would definitely recommend TurboTax. If you have a ton of forms, assets, kids, etc., I'd probably go to a tax professional. I have just basic tax documents, and TurboTax makes it more convenient. But if you have more, you will definitely need to know more about tax preparation if you decide to do it yourself. But TurboTax provides you with step by step instructions and makes it very easy to do.

If you have basic reading skills, you can use TurboTax for your filing. I have been using it for over ten years and have never had an issue with it. It honestly is a fool proof system and even a beginner tax preparer could do it. It guides you through every little aspect, so if you can find that information on your W-2 or tax form, you can fill it in. Simple as that. I have always recommended TurboTax and everyone I know has had success with it as well.

I've been using TurboTax for years and thought that all those other sites were a waste of money. This year I decided to try one of them and was able to file both my federal and state returns for under $10. TurboTax is fine, but there are cheaper options out there,

TurboTax has made some pretty bad business decisions this year by hiking up their prices. My wife and I have been filing through them for ten years already. This year, we were just so sick of all the changes and all the different versions you had to buy if you had more than just basic W-2's. We took our tax docs to a professional around the corner who offered us a much better price. When in doubt, file local.

If I felt like TurboTax was an honest tax return program, they would have gotten all five stars. I was aware that there fees had gone up after family members had told me, but I decided to file with them anyway just like I have been for years. The problem is that they don't tell you how much you're going to be paying for the actual TurboTax software until you get to the very end. You take all this time only to be told you have to buy other TurboTax ... versions. It's ridiculous. More Less

I've used Turbo Tax for more than a decade. Their product is great if you have a simple return to file. However, if you are dealing with mortgage(s), complex family and/or business situations, then you should educate yourself on the basics of tax policies and consider turbo tax as a tool. It's not going to give you great tax advice, but it will make filing taxes easier if you come prepared.

Turbo Tax has gone downhill and as a long time user, I am sad to say that I am no longer using them. After investing almost an hour of my time inputting all of my tax documents, I was informed by the program that I would have to purchase the $35 deluxe AND $55 premier versions just to complete my tax filing for the year. I was stunned and canceled everything. I ended up taking my taxes to a local preparer and was much happier with the rate and the ... service. More Less

Turbo Tax was my go-to for years, prior to using my CPA. It's easy for those who have simple tax returns (I can't speak for those who have multiple deductions, etc). I compared the returns they created with a CPA's and they generated a refund that was the same as the CPA came up with. I would recommend TT to anyone looking for a simple way to do taxes, on their own time.

For a simple W-2 income, I'd recommend it. It's very user-friendly and easy to do. However, for various other situations where things could get more complex, e.g. business, independent contractor, and etc, I'd recommend getting the help of a good CPA or a tax professional.

I've used TurboTax for several years now and it does make doing your taxes easy even though it does take a while to answer all the questions. My only concern with using it is that it's not as good as an actual person to prepare your taxes for you, so you might miss a deduction you could have taken or you might actually mess something up and risk an audit. Depending on your income level it might pay dividends to get a tax person, but this app is ... just fine if you're not worried about those things and will get you done in about an hour. One nice bonus is that it will allow you to file federal and state at the same time. More Less

I used the software straight from my tablet. It was very easy to use and understand, and progressed in an organized manner which helped me through the process. The software I used was free, since I only had a standard return to file.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who doesn't need to itemize as it's simple, quick, and FREE!

I know TurboTax has had its issues with Intuit increasing the prices of filing schedule c's and what not, but I am still a loyal customer. It is hard to change what you have been doing for years and years, even if it changes itself. I did pay a little more this year to use TurboTax but hey, it was still really easy and quick to do. You can't deny that they guide you through the process like no one tax filing program.

I am a huge fan of doing things from my home, from the comfort of my computer chair. I work from home and am a big do it yourself-er. Taxes are no different. I do both my own and my husbands taxes with this program. Despite his hesitation when we first married a couple years ago, he has realized that TurboTax is so understandable that it is not hard to file your taxes yourself. It is a great program for people like me, and I'd recommend it for simple self ... tax preparation. More Less

This company has THE WORST customer service you could imagine! I had an issue and ended up paying for a feature I didn't even use, and when I contacted the customer service department, they were less than helpful. No, they were downright rude. No rep could help and I was bounced from person to person until the line inconspicuously went dead. I called again, was informed I'd get a refund check in eight weeks, and was hung up on again. Never again will I deal with this company...

This is the best option out there, You don't have to pay an expensive tax preparer to file your returns for you, just do your own filing with TurboTax. Quick and easy and they found me lots of credits I didn't even know I could get.

I have been getting my TurboTax return loaded onto a prepaid debit card for the past couple years. This has been fine until this year. I didn't receive my card when I was supposed to and called in to see if I could get a replacement. There was such a mix up between this years card and last years card. I spoke with various customer service representatives and none of them could figure out my problem or issue me a new card. I haven't gotten my tax refund yet and ... am looking into some sort of legal action. More Less

I have used Turbo Tax for many years but will no longer be a customer after this year due to the increase in cost. I initially bought Turbo Tax for around $150, then realized that I had to upgrade to the premier product, which was an additional cost. I purchased it and filed my taxes as usual without any other issue. But I am not going to pay for the premier versions when they cost so much more now. It doesn't make sense and I think they will lose many ... customers because of this. More Less

Turbo Tax charges a little fee to get your return directly deposited into your account. Also, if you happen to get a higher return of a certain amount, you don't even qualify for a paper check, so you are ultimately stuck paying that fee whether or not you like it. In my opinion, for all that money, I would rather go to a local office and have a person do my taxes. I didn't realize this until after I had done all the work, so I was kind of left ... to file with Turbo Tax anyway. More Less

I've used TurboTax for both my personal and business filings for years. My first filing with TurboTax was back in 2008 I believe. It's amazing how far the software has come. The first iterations were pretty clunky but they've made drastic improvements to TurboTax every year. The experience found in the current iteration is really intuitive. TurboTax guides you through the process in a step by step Q&A process. They help to maximize your return by covering all bases.

I especially like the charity deduction tool. I login and use ... it throughout the year to itemize any charitable deductions to places like Goodwill. Very convenient way of doing so.

Overall, I am very happy with TurboTax and will be using them again this year.

Apparently this company has decided to implement a plethora of fees this year! After filing I got my return and saw just how much was taken out in fees to use the online service. While filing, the site didn't show all of the fees I'd be paying. I am extremely upset and I will not be using TurboTax again. I have told everyone I know and they are also taking a stand against the company. Go to a company that offers transparency, that way you will actually know what you're ... paying. More Less

I bought the Deluxe and Business version of TurboTax for my S Corporation and afterward realized the Premier upgrade was an additional cost. I'm sure this happened to various people this year. Since I already spent the money I filed with the programs I had and that was that. If I knew there was going to be the extra cost I probably would not have bought it. Next time I will go somewhere else to file.

I was a little dissatisfied with TurboTax policy changes from last year but I feel like they are working to make it right. I bought deluxe last year and now I've found out that TurboTax is offering a free upgrade to premium for all customers who had purchased deluxe the previous year. I was very disgruntled before and was not going to file my 2014 taxes with them, but after this I will. They have righted their wrongs in my book.
