The basics of Facebook Messenger P2P payments

Facebook Messenger allows users who are 18 or older to send and receive person-to-person (P2P) payments in the U.S., France, and the United Kingdom. Although the service is being discontinued in Europe on June 15, 2019, it will still be available in the U.S.
There is no cost to send or receive payments, and you can manage them through the mobile app or from a desktop computer.
If you use Facebook Messenger regularly, this function provides a convenient way to make or receive payments from friends and family.
Note that the P2P service is designed for personal, not commercial, use. If Facebook suspects you of using the service for business, merchant, or commercial transactions, it may become unavailable to you without notice. Additionally, Facebook may reverse transactions or place a hold on them if they confirm misuse.

How to send Facebook Messenger payments

The process is easy and straight-forward. To make Facebook Messenger payments, just follow these steps:
  1. Log into your Facebook account. If you don’t have an account yet, create one and then log in.
  2. Enter your payment details. Go to ‘Account Settings’ and select ‘Payments.’ Next, click ‘Account Settings’ and look under the section that says ‘Payment Methods.’ There you can add a credit card, debit card, Facebook gift card, or PayPal account. You also will have the option to set up a personal identification number (PIN) if you choose. This helps to prevent unauthorized payments.
  3. Connect as friends. You have to be ‘friends’ on Facebook with the person you want to send a payment to.
  4. Send money. Open Facebook Messenger and initiate a new message with the person you want to send money to. Click the dollar sign ($) above the text box. A small box will pop up asking you what the payment is for, how much you’re sending, and which payment method you want to use. Once you’re all set, click ‘Pay.’
It’s as simple as that! After clicking ‘Pay,’ your money is on its way to your Facebook friend.

Facebook Messenger P2P payment requests

When someone requests money from you, you will receive a message notification in Facebook Messenger from that person. You will have the option to accept or deny the request.
If you accept the request, the money will be automatically withdrawn from the payment account that you set up. If you deny the request, no money will be withdrawn, and the person will get a notification informing them you denied the request.

Receiving payments through Facebook Messenger P2P Payments

When you receive a payment through Facebook Messenger, you’ll get a notification and can accept or deny it. If you accept it, Facebook will deposit the amount into your payment account. If you deny it, the payment will return to the sender.
Note that if you haven’t already done so, you’ll need to put your payment details on file to accept the payment. Further, although Facebook doesn’t typically hold the money, some banks do. In these cases, the transfer may be delayed a few days.

Facebook Messenger payment security

How safe is it to send payments through Facebook Messenger?
Facebook encrypts all payment information, including details about transactions and payment methods. Further, the company stores payment data separately from Facebook network data and monitors for fraud. This is industry-standard security for apps and online services.
Once you register your payment information on Facebook, it’s a good idea to set up a PIN (or Touch ID if available). This offers an extra layer of protection against unauthorized payments.

How much does it cost to send payments through Facebook Messenger?

Facebook Messenger payments are free to send and receive. However, if you are sending a payment and have insufficient funds, you may incur an insufficient funds fee or reversal fee.

Is Facebook Messenger’s P2P payment service right for you?

Facebook Messenger’s P2P payment service enables U.S. Facebook users to send money to friends quickly and easily. It’s great for things like splitting the cost of a night out or sending money as a birthday gift. However, the service won’t be helpful if you need to make business payment transfers or transfers overseas. The good news is, there are plenty of other money transfer services available for international or commercial transfers.
