A small group of educators with $856 in assets founded Extra Credit Union in 1954. The teachers actually operated the credit union in an unused high school classroom. Through a commitment to education, community and service, Extra Credit Union grew, and today, has more than 19,000 members and $322 million in assets. Extra Credit Union is known for its heart to serve by offering help, guidance, counsel, and programs for the entire community. We operate a full-service branch at our state-of-the-art headquarters in Warren. As the only credit union in Southeast Michigan to offer a certified K-12 financial curriculum, we provide hands-on learning, financial fundamentals and customized services to help students make good financial decisions now and create a brighter financial future. We learned that our members were feeling defeated and looking for help, for solutions, for hope. So, we looked at the ways we were lending and the criteria we were using, and we began to open access to more people.
