What we love about Prosper Invest

Prosper operates a lending marketplace that matches borrowers with people who want to invest in consumer loans. Investors can help fund loans with very low minimums, making it easy to build a diversified portfolio of consumer loans.
The company offers loans from a variety of borrowers and rates each loan based on the borrower’s creditworthiness. Potential returns vary with the creditworthiness of the loan, so investors can build portfolios with customized risk and return profiles.

What could Prosper Invest do better?

There are a few drawbacks to consider before investing.
One is that Prosper charges hefty management fees, which can significantly eat into investors’ returns.
Another is that Prosper isn’t available in every state and some states place additional limitations on how much you can invest or how you can invest. For example, in some states, you may have to meet certain income requirements to invest or have a minimum net worth before you open an investor account.
Another consideration is that peer-to-peer lending is still a relatively new field for investors. There isn’t as much data on the risk of investing or how frequently borrowers default. If people do default on the loans you’ve invested in, you could lose your investment.

Prosper Invest’s backstory

Prosper was founded in 2006 as a peer-to-peer lending marketplace. The company helps match people who want to invest in consumer debt with borrowers who need loans. The company has helped fund over $5 billion in loans.

The Verdict

Investing in loans through Prosper can be a unique way for investors to diversify their portfolios. However, the fees and potential restrictions make investing through Prosper complicated. If you live somewhere with few restrictions and want to add some unique investments to your portfolio, Prosper is a good choice but most people will be fine with a more traditional investment strategy.

The proof is in the pudding. I personally would never trust someone who is basically homeless, jumping from one cheap short term rental to another. The owner of this company is not to be trusted. He inflates himself and will use whatever means necessary to swindle you out of your money.

I've been in Prosper since 2008, average return 7% +/- 0.5. However, I've been gradually letting my portfolio dissipate naturally over the last few years, just two loans yet to payout. Why? 1. The biggest deficiency, for me, is that they are not set up to name a beneficiary. I'm retired now and my wife is several years younger. I might have stayed in if I could name her a beneficiary. 2. ...Show More

Horrible, it feels very scamm-ish. They said they would tell me how much I was approved for before pulling my credit. Credit score 717. They said I was approved for $39k . They ask me for my checking account information to make the deposit. I told them I only wanted $30k , they said no problem. I signed the loan documents, received an ...Show More

The service wouldn't let me sign up on their webpage, I kept receiving an error message. This is something that I will look into to see if there is anything preventing me from qualifying. Otherwise, they are a leading fintech company and it's worth looking into

Their site is pretty basic. With all the robo-investment apps floating around, you'd expect much more. However, since I'm only using their service to spread my portfolio, It does not seem so bad. The application process is pretty straight-forward. The only gripe is that they require you having a minimum of $80,000 annual income so if you're looking to dip your toes into investing, this might not be the ...Show More

"New" web app is poorly designed, barely gets updates, and is mostly useless. You can look at notes, buy more notes, and change your address...sort of...if it works today. Can't sell notes anymore so if you decide you don't like Prosper after all, too bad, you are stuck with these people until your notes are paid in full or charged off. In addition to the lack of functionality in the web app, ...Show More
