A Roth IRA is a type of retirement account that allows you to save for retirement on a tax-free basis. Contributions to a Roth IRA are made with after-tax dollars, and you can withdraw the money you've saved in the account tax-free after age 59 1/2 as long as you've had the account for at least five years.
