The L.L. Bean Mastercard Credit Card is solid, but only if you shop at L.L. Bean frequently.
L.L.Bean is a retail company founded in 1912 by Leon Leonwood Bean. Headquartered in Freeport, Maine, this company specializes in clothing and outdoor recreation equipment. So, if you are an outdoor enthusiast and shop at L.L. Bean often, read on to learn more about why the L.L. Bean MasterCard Credit Card is worth having.
L.L. Bean Credit Card: The Basics
The L.L. Bean Mastercard Credit Card offers pretty good rewards for loyal shoppers.
You’ll earn 3% cash back on all regular L.L. Bean purchases, plus 10% back on L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools (which offer adventures like kayaking, fly fishing, camping, and more).
The card can also be used for non-L.L. Bean purchases, for which you’ll receive 1% cash back. Once your cash-back balance has reached $10, you’ll automatically get a $10 L.L. Bean coupon. You can redeem your rewards in stores, online, or by phone.
Cardholders also receive special L.L. Bean perks, including free return shipping on all online orders, free monogramming, and exclusive sales and offers throughout the year. And you’ll get free access to your FICO credit score, which can help you stay on top of your credit.
The card charges no annual fee and has some decent interest rates, compared with other store credit cards.

What we like about the L.L. Bean Credit Card
If you’re an L.L. Bean fanatic, there’s a lot to like about this card:
The card’s 3% rewards rate on L.L. Bean purchases is impressive. The fact that you can use and earn rewards everywhere else gives the card more purpose. Also, the automatic rewards redemption is a good perk for people who don’t want to keep track of their rewards to know when they can redeem them.
L.L. Bean perks
When you shop online, it’s always difficult to know exactly how something will fit. Without the L.L. Bean Mastercard Credit Card, you’ll pay $6.50 to return something that you don’t like. Monogramming is also a big deal to some people, and the retailer typically charges $8 to make your gift personal. Lastly, who doesn’t like exclusive promotions in their inbox?
Rates and fees
“Store cards often have very high interest rates,” says Freddie Huynh, vice president of credit risk analytics for Freedom Financial Network. He says, “If you do not repay the balance in full at the end of every billing cycle, the interest charges can be exceedingly high.”
If you do not repay the balance in full at the end of every billing cycle, the interest charges can be exceedingly high.”
In fact, the average interest rate for a store credit card is 23.84%. With the L.L. Bean Mastercard Credit Card, however, even the highest rate you could qualify for is below the average. The card also charges no annual fee, which is a must-have for a store credit card.

What we don’t like about the L.L. Bean Credit Card
Despite the card’s perks, it’s not for everyone. Here are some things to consider before applying:
Low base rewards rate
A 1% rewards rate is mediocre in the credit card world, especially if you can qualify for a good rewards credit card.
No sign-up bonus
Most retail credit cards offer a bonus or a discount when you first sign up. This one skimps on the sign-up bonus, though.
Steep creditworthiness requirements
Store credit cards are usually easy to get, even if you have poor or fair credit. To get the L.L. Bean Mastercard Credit Card, however, you’ll need at least good or excellent credit. And if you have a credit score in one of those ranges, you might be better off simply getting a good cash-back credit card.
Other Credit cards To Consider
If you’re not sure if you’ll spend enough at L.L. Bean to make the card worth it, here are a few other cards you can look into:
Citi Double Cash
The Citi Double Cash offers a flat 2% cash-back rate on all purchases. There are no bonus categories to worry about and no annual fee to eat into your rewards.
This card doesn’t offer a sign-up bonus, but it does offer a 0% APR promotion on balance transfers for 18 months. You just need to complete all your balance transfers within the first four months after opening your account.
If you have high-interest credit card debt that you’re trying to pay off, this card is a good one to have.
Chase Freedom Unlimited
With the Chase Freedom Unlimited, you’ll get a flat 1.5% cash-back rate on all your purchases. What sets this card apart from the Double Cash is that it also offers a sign-up bonus.
As of September 2017, you’ll get a $150 bonus when you spend $500 or more within the first three months of getting approved. You’ll also get a $25 bonus if you add an authorized user to your credit card and make a purchase within the same three-month period.
In addition to a 0% APR balance transfer promotion, the Freedom Unlimited also offers a 0% APR promotion on purchases. Both promotions are for the first 15 months that you have your card.

Should you get the L.L. Bean Mastercard Credit Card?
